gaming for the environment

Fall 2019 - 3 weeks

This project was an experimental sprint. We were put in groups and given randomized prompt. My group was assigned to make an artifact intended for virtual reality with the target audience as climate change skeptics. We decided to use Cinema 4D to make a game where your actions in a national park effect the nature around you.

the problem

Every day, people enter national parks and cause serious damage to our beautiful landmarks. If they’re not educated about the consequences, permanent damage will be caused.

the goals

education

Teach park visitor that their actions, no matter how small, can greatly impact the future of our national parks.

preservation

This is one of the main goals of national parks. While people should be able to appreciate their beauty, human impact makes preservation difficult.

visual communication

Make education fun, utilizing gamification and virtual reality while still educating users on the impact of their actions.

style frame

Mountains modeled by Carolyna McConeghy, animals by Emily Irving, foliage modeled by me.

initial UI design

We were going for an Oregon Trail-esque interaction.

final solution

We decided the options should be better integrated into the game. The low-poly style and candy-like color palette were meant to keep it light while still teaching a lesson.
